[Tristan] When you think about technology and it being an existential threat, you know, thats a big claim, and its easy to then, in your mind, think, Okay, so, there I am with the phone scrolling, clicking, using it. These services are killing people and causing people to kill themselves. The film features interviews with many former employees, executives and other professionals from top tech companies and social media platforms, who provide their first-hand experiences of working in and around the tech industry. Interviewees state that social media platforms and big tech companies have been instrumental in providing positive change for society; they also note that such platforms have also caused problematic social, political, and cultural consequences. [Tristan] Persuasive technology is just sort of design intentionally applied to the extreme, where we really want to modify someones behavior. The Prisoner Dilemma is a simple but very effective example of social dilemma. [Randima (Randy) Fernando] Perhaps the most dangerous piece of all this is the fact that its driven by technology thats advancing exponentially. [Justin Rosenstein] When you think about how some of these companies work, it starts to make sense. That ref just, like, sucked or something. The more they talk about it and the more they divide us, the more they have the power, the more. This is short-term thinking based on this religion of profit at all costs, as if somehow, magically, each corporation acting in its selfish interest is going to produce the best result. Its easy to think that its just a few stupid people who get convinced, but the algorithm is getting smarter and smarter every day. It focuses on: Its exploitation of its users for financial gain through surveillance capitalism and data mining Its design is meant to nurture an addiction . [Tristan] The race to keep peoples attention isnt going away. Like, wheres the existential threat? There are times when the interests of people, of users, is actually more important than the profits of somebody whos already a billionaire? You make money the more you allow unregulated messages to reach anyone for the best price. I feel like were on the fast track to dystopia, and its gonna take a miracle to get us out of it. [Tristan] Even two friends who are so close to each other, who have almost the exact same set of friends, they think, you know, Im going to news feeds on Facebook. Lets just get people tagging each other in photos all day long.. [Tristan] How does this come across on camera if I were to do, like, this move, [Tristan] Exactly. If its not that big a deal, dont use it for a week. I thought, God, this is classic irony. [Tristan] Its about making two sides who couldnt hear each other anymore, who didnt want to hear each other anymore, who didnt trust each other anymore. And what often happens is when people buy their cell phone, the cell phone shop owner will actually preload Facebook on there for them and open an account for them. [Jaron] Thats a little too simplistic. Toward the end of Netflix's new documentary-drama The Social Dilemma, former Google employee Tristan Harris describes technology as "simultaneous utopia and dystopia.". How much time can we get you to spend? They come home from school, and theyre on their devices. [Tristan] The attention extraction model is not how we want to treat human beings. Every day, I went home and I worked on it for a couple hours every single night. Nice, simple business. Like, how do you wake up from the matrix when you dont know youre in the matrix? And that pattern points to social media.
