Although Giovanni Michelotti, the Italian designer who had also worked on everything from the Herald to Ferraris to BMWs to Fiats, had already created a prototype of the Spitfire, it was delayed and eventually shelved indefinitely. III's final production year (1970) included an integrated rear reverse and license plate lamp, side lamps at the front and rear and new badging. The model was named after the famed Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane of World War II.[7].
